  • Handmade punch needle coasters (set of 4) made from Shaker wool by Bonnie Faulkner of Yarmouth, Maine.
Featuring a white background with blue and purple florals on each. Backs are lined with felt to ensure your tabletops do not get scratched.
Punch needle is a traditional craft that's been around since the 15th century. Initially known as the 'punch stitch' was primarily used for adorning religious garments. It was also a craft used by men during lengthy sea voyages who would create punched rugs to pass the time between ports.
The Shakers have had sheep on their farm for decades and currently have a flock of over 65!
When someone asks me what punch needle is, I tell them it’s miniature version of rug hooking. If they don’t know what that is then I explain you use a hollow thin needle with colored thread running through it. The thread punches through your design on fabric and makes a loop on one side, many loops create an image. It’s very three dimensional in look.
Measures 4" across. Set of 4. Bonnie teaches gel printing, book binding, and punch needle embroidery workshops with us at Shaker Village.
  • Handmade punch needle wall hanging made from Shaker wool by Bonnie Faulkner of Yarmouth, Maine.
Inspired by Sister Hannah Cohoon's Tree of Life, this punch needle wall hanging was made with 2-ply Shaker yarn spun from virgin wool from the sheep on the Shaker farm which include Romney, Shropshire, Icelandic, North Country Cheviot and Finnsheep breeds.  Accented with seed beads embroidered into some of the apples.
