Stunning tintype photographs by Cole Caswell of Portland, Maine. Cole has been visiting Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village for the past few years, offering his tintype portrait services at Shaker Village special events. We are honored that he has been able to make a special trip to work on a series of landscape images of Shaker Village. These tintypes are each one-of-a-kind, though there are multiple individual pieces that are available upon request (photos can be sent to see that particular image).
Tintype, also melainotype and ferrotype, is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a sheet of iron metal that is blackened by painting, laquering or enamelling and is used as a support for a collodion photographic emulsion. As the support of the tintype (there is no actual tin used) is resilient and does not need drying, instant photographs can be produced only a few minutes after taking the photograph on-site.
Each tintype measures approximately 6 5/8″ x 4 5/8″, is unframed, and are signed and numbered on the reverse.
Cole received an interdisciplinary M.F.A. from the Maine College of Art, and has been working, living and traveling throughout the county in a nomadic format. He is an Adjunct Faculty Researcher at Prescott College in Arizona and Adjunct Faculty at Southern Maine Community College.
