The Cobbler Shop was built by the Shakers in the 1790s. Shoemakers custom made footwear for the Community of 180 souls. The last Shaker cobbler anywhere was Sabbathday Lake’s Brother George Reynolds, who died in 1922. Shakers through the 19th century had special wool felted shoes for Meeting so that they could easily participate in the marching and dancing!
WOOLIGANS cozy felted slipper kits by Jax and BARD Shoes offer a delightful crafting experience for those who enjoy creating their own footwear with a touch of personal flair. This class includes everything you need to make a pair of warm, snug slippers, such as our exclusive blend of wool felt materials, needle, thread, and detailed instructions to guide you through the process– an, of course, in-person instruction. All materials are sourced locally and include both sustainable and recycled components. Perfect for both beginners and experienced crafters, these kits allow you to explore the art of hand stitching while creating a functional and stylish pair of slippers. Whether you’re making them for yourself or as a thoughtful handmade gift, our WOOLIGANS slippers provide a cozy, satisfying creative outlet.
