10am–3pm
One of the earliest industries of the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Sisters was textile production. The Sisters produced large numbers of wool blankets and other textiles with bold stripes and twill patterns created from natural dyes.
Marty Elkin of A Wrinkle in Thyme Farm will take you through a full day of learning to dye with plants. We will tour Shaker Village’s herb garden and surrounding areas in search of colors to use for dyeing. We will focus on using Cochineal (red), Madder root (orange), and Indigo (blue, plus added to red makes purple). You will leave with skeins of each color and the option to purchase extra skeins in the class of Marty’s farm wool to further explore the wonderful world of natural dye!
Bring or purchase a 2-3 ounce skein of wool yarn to be dyed to take home for yourself or for a gift.
Class size: 10
All levels welcome!
