Curious about stitching outside of the embroidery hoop?  In this class, you’ll learn the techniques and skills needed to stitch successfully on paper!  With needles in hand and a bit of creativity, we’ll embellish vintage postcards and holiday cards with colorful embroidery floss.

This class is appropriate for absolute beginners as well as those who have some embroidery experience already.  In the first part of the session, we’ll cover the techniques specific to embroidering on paper and practice stitching on a paper sampler.  You’ll learn a variety of embroidery stitches that work well on paper, such as back stitch, chain stitch, stem stitch, French knots, whipped and woven wheels, and Rhodes stitch.  After completing the sampler, we’ll discuss design and color planning for your postcard or greeting card.  You’ll have time to begin stitching your project and get help with any questions that may come up.  You’ll go home with the skills and materials needed to complete your project and continue exploring paper embroidery on your own!

All necessary materials will be provided: a paper sampler, 5 skeins of embroidery floss, 1 vintage postcard, 1 greeting card, and needles.

Your instructor is Robert Sheckler of Redmond Philbert Handwork, an enthusiastic learner, teacher, and broommaker living and working in the Portland area. Whenever he is not making brooms, Robert loves to have needle and thread in hand. He is currently studying online with the Royal School of Needlework and enjoys experimenting with different materials in embroidery.

All levels: No experience required.
