Sarah Tuttle (Vocalist)  +  Jeff Christmas (Guitar, Vocalist)  +  Chris Moore (Mandolins, Vocalist)

Maine-based musicians and friends Sarah Tuttle, Jeff Christmas, and Chris Moore will present a delightful and diverse program of vocal and instrumental music, rooted in American folk, and sacred music traditions. Selections will include a variety of traditional Shaker songs and tunes from the 18th and 19th centuries, the Sacred Harp tradition, ballads and tunes from the 20th century American folk country, and blues styles, along with original songs and instrumentals. Simple messages of peace, love, and union will carry the evening in the warm and welcoming 1894 Shaker Dwelling House Chapel.

SARAH TUTTLE enjoys a multifaceted career as a performer, teacher, and public radio host. Sarah is committed to authentic storytelling, joyful collaboration, and meaningful connection with her audiences – onstage, on the air, and beyond. From Wagner roles to modern opera, chamber music to art song, Sarah’s performances have been praised for their “fine balance of energy and introspection.” (The Wall Street Journal). Sarah has a special interest in contemporary vocal music, and most recently launched Songs From Here, a Maine-based initiative dedicated to commissioning new vocal works from Maine’s composers. Offstage, Sarah shares her knowledge and passion for music over the air on Maine Public Classical. She also curates and hosts Songbook, a weekly vocal program with an emphasis on art song. Sarah maintains a voice studio at 317 Main Community Music Center in Yarmouth, where she works with students of various ages and abilities towards meeting their personal goals. She is proud to have spent two summers as a Vocal Fellow with the Tanglewood Music Center, from whom she received the Grace B. Jackson Prize for Excellence. She makes her home in Portland, Maine. www.sarahtuttle.com

JEFF CHRISTMAS began playing music when he was 6 years old. Since then he has made his way from pop guitar to musical theater to jazz bands to opera to Americana and just about everything in between. Jeff specializes in vocal instruction with experience in a wide variety of genres. He is equally at home on the operatic stage and in a smoky bar. Pedagogically, Jeff believes that no genre has a monopoly on good, healthy, artistic singing and works to nurture that in all of his students. Jeff was raised in Burlington, North Carolina and has lived in California, Massachusetts, Tennessee, and South Carolina before moving to Portland in 2015. He got his undergraduate degree in Music Industry Studies (with a minor in Spanish) at Appalachian State University and then went on to get a Masters of Music from the Boston Conservatory.

CHRIS MOORE is a musician, composer, and educator from Maine. His interest in Shaker music began in the early 1970s, when he heard Sister R. Mildred Barker singing at worship in the 1794 meetinghouse. He has led Shaker music classes and workshops around the US. Chris has composed, performed, and recorded music internationally for dance, film, television, spoken word, theater, and visual art projects. Chris has led Shaker music programs at 317 Main Community Music Center, the Farnsworth Art Museum, Frist Center for Visual Arts, South Union Shaker Village, Vanderbilt University, The Omega Institute, Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, among others.

Join the Shakers and staff for an exclusive evening concert in the Brick Dwelling House, an intimate setting with superb acoustics for music and vocals, where the Shakers have gathered in worship and song for over 140 years.

Proceeds of this concert benefit the ongoing historic preservation of the Herb House Cultural Center.

The Herb House project aims to create a communal space for people to share traditional arts, herbal knowledge, and fellowship within the only active Shaker community in the world.
