1pm-5pm Eastern
Virtual – via Zoom (will also be recorded for viewing & making any time)
In this Virtual Zoom workshop, basket weaver Carolyn Kemp will guide you through making a miniature Birch Bark Necklace Basket in the Choctaw Style. This small basket, woven from birch bark, is inspired by a basket called a Choctaw Pouch.
The finished basket measures 1.25″ x 1.25″ and can be worn as a necklace on a waxed cord. Beads are optional but included in the kit along with a detailed pattern for reference.
The bark is prepared by Carolyn but she will describe and demonstrate the processes involved.
Students should enjoy working “small” and have basket making experience or be a very proficient craftsman.
Kits will be mailed out to registrants ahead of the workshop. Your full kit includes birch bark, string, beads and Carolyn will also include small toothless alligator clips in the kits. The only tools you need to provide is a regular scissor and a smile!
If you can’t make it to the live Zoom session, it will be recorded and a link will be emailed to all registrants so that you can watch again or weave along for the first time at your own pace.
Your instructor is our friend and prior neighbor, Carolyn Kemp. Carolyn is an accomplished basketmaker who has written and illustrated several popular books on basket making, A Basketmaker’s Odyssey and The Basket Book, both available in our shop. Carolyn lives in Lancaster, South Carolina and has been teaching workshops with Shaker Village for years, having previously been our neighbor. She continues to offer workshops with us through these virtual options and has kits, finished baskets, and books in our store as well as her Etsy shop.
