Natural Dyes for Wool Workshop
Saturday, September 16, 2017, 10am–3pm
One of the earliest industries of the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Sisters was textile production. The Sisters produced large numbers of wool blankets and other textiles with bold stripes and twill patterns created from natural dyes.
Marty Elkin of A Wrinkle in Thyme Farm will take you through a full day of learning to dye with plants from her dyers’ garden as well as from plants you will gather from the Shakers’ gardens. Plants may include marigolds, onion skins, goldenrod, madder root, and indigo. You will leave with sample skeins of each color.
Bring or purchase a 2-3 ounce skein of wool yarn to be dyed to take home for yourself or for a gift. Class size: 6.
